Dan got the idea for Herald Tea in the spring of 2019. It came after a decade of working in specialty coffee shops on the west coast, farming, and even starting a bike-delivery sourdough bread company. Dan landed in Portland, Oregon in 2014 finished his degree in graphic design, and married his sweetheart, Lauren, who is the founder of Mizuba Tea Company. Given that Mizuba specializes in ceremonial matcha and heritage green tea from Japan, Dan saw an opportunity to start importing world-class oolongs, blacks, and other tea from Taiwan, China, India and beyond. The idea quickly turned into the process of building a meaningful brand around a collection of tea, and we knew it couldn’t just be any tea, it needed to be Tea of Character. So amidst countless cups of tea, and at times a little coffee:), Herald slowly started to take shape. As we soon realized, great brands aren’t created overnight; they require diligent nurturing and patience with the process. We are just so glad we can share part of our story with you!

The mission at Herald is to always develop lasting relationships and source tea directly from the growers and producers. In other words we avoid the added cost of working with brokers and importers, and have the unique opportunity to know exactly where our tea comes from. This gives us profound perspective and understanding as to the character of each tea we purchase, and we have the joy of directly thanking and supporting those who lovingly produce each tea. We understand it is not always easy to source tea this way, but we know that by doing this, we are able to find, appreciate, and share truly impeccable teas. Our goal is always to offer the best possible prices to you, our tea friends, so you can rest assured that you are getting incredible value for the tea we share with you. Each and every Herald tea that we feature in the collection is the result of countless hours of carefully tasting hundreds of teas from all over the world. We lean on our 15+ years of experience in the tea and coffee industry where using our palate to taste everything from bad to outstanding is critical to ensure a lot of coffee or tea is worth committing to purchase. This approach is core to how we have built Herald Tea Co, where each tea is treated not as a commodity to take for granted, but as a beautiful agricultural gift to be cherished and shared.
